Writing for Dummies: by glolinde
So, I originally wrote this for a friend. However, after I wrote it, I thought that it was really good! So, I decided to post it as a page. I hope that this helps any aspiring writers and authors!
SETTING – The setting of your book is just what surrounds them. Are they happy when it starts out and, as the story goes on, become depressed (or vice versa)? Think of it as having three parts; The beginning, middle, and end. How is the environment around them?
PLOT – A plot contains five parts; The introduction, the action, the climax, the falling action, and the ending. Think of it as the ocean during a storm… as the storm starts out, the water is low on the horizon (this is your introduction). Then, as the storm continues and gets more violent (which would be the action), the waves get higher and higher (this is your climax). The storm eases and starts to die down (your falling action) and later on, the storm is gone (your ending).
- Introduction: Introduce your characters/plot. This entirely depends on how you write and how you want it to begin. The important thing to remember is that you need to attract your reader during the first few sentences, or they’ll get bored. Don’t worry about that yet, though. The important thing is to just write!
- The Action: This is where you should start to show where your story is heading, or show the climax in a foreshadow. Things start to tense up with your characters and the story slowly starts to build. Never go too fast. That will lead to an unsatisfying story.
- Climax: The height of your story! Where the conflict is at it’s highest. There are tears and bloodshed, but that’s okay! The more conflict there is between your characters, the better. You also might choose to resolve your plot/conflict, here and in the falling action, but that’s up to you.
REMEMBER THE STORM AND THE OCEAN!
- The Falling Action: Here, things start to die down. Depending on where your story is, and where you want to go with it, you can add another climax or end it. A great thing to do with the falling action is to have a main character confess to something; Maybe they love the other character? Maybe they’re dying. Doesn’t matter.
- Ending: The happily ever after. Or not. It could be a bittersweet ending too. That is totally up too you. You are god here in your fictional world. You call the shots (well… up to a certain point. Your characters are alive too. Remember that).
Don’t forget: You have (HAVE) to “torture” your characters. That’s good too. And, if you enjoy it… that’s even better.
CONFLICT – The conflict; Is it internal or external? Do your main characters have to overcome a fear/other personal things or are they trying to overcome an outside force? Are they up against themselves, or something far more superior?
CHARACTER(s) –
Female Character – Insert name here
- General appearance. What color is her hair? Height? Weight? Eye color? Etc. Also, put in general style for clothing.
- What sort of personality traits does she have? Is she rebellious? Is she a girly girl? Does she hate spiders?
- A little bio about your character. Is she an orphan? Is she a drop out, or a graduate? The more you put in, the better. It’ll help you learn more about your character.
- What do the other characters say about her?
Male Character – Insert name here
- Same as female character.

If necessary, you can add more characters. You also don’t have to have two (or more) main characters, but it does help.
THEME – What is the general theme for your story? Is it love conquers all? Or, maybe time heals all wounds? Think of it as your one line summery of your whole story; Your logline.
